The Blue Caboose is owned and managed by the Lima-Allen County Convention & Visitors Bureau and staffed by nearly 30 volunteers. Community Enrichment Dinner

Location: Veterans' Memorial Civic & Convention Center.

This is the 5th Annual Community Enrichment Dinner - the minority community's most powerful annual event.

Proceeds will benefit the Walter C. Potts Entrepreneur Center, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization through the Lima Chamber Foundation.  With a solid track record of nationally known speakers and attendance of well over 400 people each year, this is an event you will not want to miss.

This year's speaker will be Dr. Mae Jemison, first woman of color to go into space.  Dr. Jemison boarded the shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.  Now, the Founder and President of two technology companies, the space flight was just one in a series of remarkable accomplishments for this dynamic woman.

Lima Astronomical Society Observing Schedule

April 2, 2010.

The Schoonover Observatory in Schoonover Park (670 N. Jefferson St., Lima) will be open at 8:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month.  This coincides with the regular monthly meetings of the Lima Astronomical Society.

The Observatory will also be open from time to time for special events related to sky phenomena taking place at the time.

On regular meeting nights, there will be a short business meeting at 8:00 p.m. followed at 8:30 p.m. by some sort of presentation lasting approximately an hour.  Observations will commence thereafter.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Society's regular meetings and any special events.
You are encouraged to come to the observatory and look through the 14-inch Celestron telescope housed at that facility.  Members of the LimaAstronomical Society will be on hand to operate the telescope and answer your questions.

African Children's Choir

Nature Pals: Bees & Honey

Josh Turner in Concert

Garlic Mustard is a biennial plant from Europe that is a prolific seeder.  Seeds can lay dormant for 10 years.  Garlic Mustard secretes chemicals into the soil which are toxic to our native spring wildflowers.  If left unchecked, Garlic Mustard can soon dominate the forest floor and destroy the ecology of our woodlands in the Park District.

The dates listed are for garlic mustard pulls at the parks.  Call to sign up.  You will be called with details about each work session.

Lima Symphony - The Spirit of Spring

Few musical works are as beloved as Bach's Brandenburg Concerto.  In the grand finale of the season, we will pair the lighthearted and lovely Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 and Schubert's mysterious Symphony No. 8 in B minor with the soaring and intricate Mass in C Minor by Mozart.  One of Mozart's best known masses, the Mass in C Minor will feature two choruses and a powerful vocal quartet.

Log Cabins and Smokehouses

The Park District has added a two-story log house to the 1800's settlement at the Allen County Farm park.  Hear the history of this structure, and join Mike Gross of Log Cabin Connections to learn about the process of rebuilding and restoring a log cabin.  From there, follow the trail through the apple orchard to the 1800's restored smokehouse.  Learn the secrets of preservation of hams and bacon.

Spring Plow Days

Step back in time with members of the Area Horses in Harness Club.  Watch as they work with draft horses and antique farm equipment preparing the ground for spring planting. Explore the 1800's log house, and wander through an apple orchard on your way to the 1850's smokehouse.  

A program about the log cabin and smokehouse will be on Saturday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m. (See separate listing)

Ottawa River Clean-up

Saturday, April 24, 2010.
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
Location: Sign up at Red Cross Building, 610 S. Collett St., Lima.

Route starting at the Red Cross building following the Ottawa River throughout Allen County.

Held the fourth Saturday in April beginning in 1993, this clean-up is one of the largest events, bringing 300+ people out to clean up the banks of the river.  Volunteers are assigned a small section, and receive a free lunch and a certificate of appreciation.

Minors are welcome and encouraged to participate with signed permission slip.  There must be at least one (1) adult for every five (5) minors.  Families and students welcome!  Must have a waiver form signed by parent/guardian.  These forms will be available the day of the clean-up or prior to the event from the City of Lima, Dept. of Community Development, 50 Town Square or online at: http://lacrpc.com/documents/minorpermission.pdf.

Gloves are mandatory!  Will be provided if needed.

Shipshewana On The Road

April 24 & 25, 2010.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Allen County Fairgrounds.

Shipshewana On The Road travels to many locations in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio each year, and in Lima there will be 215 booths with dealers selling their unique products at prices you just won't believe.  Children and their strollers are always welcome at the shows. Handicap accessibility, ATM services, free parking and a full array of refreshments for everyone's enjoyment will all be provided.

Cost: Adults, $3.00; Children 12 and under, Free.
