ArtSpace/Lima Exhibit - Fiely Smith TogetherAugust 1 - September 11, 2010. An exhibition of current and recent work by Doug Fiely and Steve Smith. Location: ArtSpace/Lima, Ellen Nelson Gallery.
Both artists are in the Department of Art at Defiance College, and both have a long, award-winning history of association with ArtSpace/Lima. Fiely won the Third Award in Spring Show 2009 for his woodcut print, Dying Poplar. In that same show, Steve Smith took the Martha Farmer Award for Sculpture with Zygote Steel, a combination stone and steel piece. This year, they won the Ceramics Award in Spring Show 2010 for their collaborative piece, Homecoming.

Bluffton University - Ceramics Exhibit/DemonstrationAugust 29 - September 27, 2010. Artist Reception: Friday, September 17 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Artist Demonstration: Monday, September 27 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Gallery hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. The exhibition of ceramics is by Mark Nafziger, resident potter at Archbold's Sauder Museum and Craft Village. Nafziger, an Archbold native who has been at Sauder Village since 1981 is a proprietor of Brush Creek Pottery there. His display at Bluffton will feature functional stoneware along with recent work with wood-fired, salt-glazed ceramics.

Greg Pitts Art ExhibitAugust 27 - September 30, 2010. Location: The Meeting Place on Market, 220 W. Market St., Lima. Greg began his foray into the arts as a young teen when he purchased his first camera from Mack Camera store in downtown Lima. For the next 30 years, he used photography as a way of expressing his artistic side, winning several awards and holding several photography exhibits throughout the country.
As an award-winning filmmaker, he wrote, produced and directed eight short films which have won awards and been featured in film festivals throughout the US and internationally.
For the past three years, Mr. Pitts has been painting. He is an abstract expressionist artist. Greg Pitts is currently on exhibit in Miami in the Wynwood Art District and Ft. Lauderdale in the Fat Arts Village. He is one of the featured artists to exhibit at this year's Art Basel Miami. Greg is donating a portion of proceeds of the sale of his artwork to the United Way in honor of his grandparents who migrated from Alabama and were very strong, hard-working people. He is also offering a limited number of custom designed coffee mugs featuring his first published piece of artwork.

Memories of Japan ExhibitJuly 1 - September 30, 2010. Location: St. Rita's Medical Center Mezzanine Gallery. ArtSpace/Lima and St. Rita's Medical Center present Memories of Japan, a celebration of the arts and crafts of Japan.
The exhibit features works from the personal collections of the Co-Chairs of the Lima Sister Cities Association, Keiko Hahn and Sandra Liechty, including dolls, fans, vases, and statues. Lima Astronomical Society Observing ScheduleSeptember 3, 2010.
The Schoonover Observatory in Schoonover Park (670 N. Jefferson St., Lima) will be open at 8:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. This coincides with the regular monthly meetings of the Lima Astronomical Society.
The Observatory will also be open from time to time for special events related to sky phenomena taking place at the time. On regular meeting nights, there will be a short business meeting at 8:00 p.m. followed at 8:30 p.m. by some sort of presentation lasting approximately an hour. Observations will commence thereafter.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Society's regular meetings and any special events. You are encouraged to come to the observatory and look through the 14-inch Celestron telescope housed at that facility. Members of the LimaAstronomical Society will be on hand to operate the telescope and answer your questions.

The Lima branch of the American Association of University Women will start collecting on June 8 through August 26. Bring in your fiction and nonfiction books, college texts published since 2000, records, CDs, DVDs, children's books and specialized magazines to the collection location at the former Big Lots at Northland Plaza.
Collection hours are 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon Tuesdays & Thursdays, and 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Proceeds from the Book Fair go to college scholarships for area young women, as well as camperships for area middle school girls.

This field trip, led by Janet Sweigart, will be a wild mushroom hunt at her tree farm in Maysville. J & J's Woodsland was recognized in 2005 as the Ohio Tree Farm of the Year, and in 2006 the Sweigarts were recognized as North Central Regional Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year.

Walking Thru Autumn Hiking SeriesSaturday, September 18, 2010. 9:00 a.m. (approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hour hike). Location: Ottawa Metro Park, Evans Arboretum, 2632 Ada Rd., Lima.
This is the 4th year for this popular series of 8 consecutive Saturday morning hikes. Combine the benefits of walking with an opportunity to explore some of the 27 miles of Metro Park trails.
Attend your first hike and receive a hand-made hickory, sassafras or dogwood walking stick and a guide to the Metro Park trails. Upon completing 6 out of the 8 hikes, participants will receive a 2010 Metro Parks hiking stick medallion.
All participants are required to register, and a $10 registration fee is charged. The registration fee will be waived for those not interested in a hiking stick.
September 18 marks the first hike; however, participants may register as late as October 1 for the final 6 hikies. After this date, walk-ins are welcome, but will not be eligible for the hiking stick or the medallion.

A.B.A.T.E. of Ohio Toy RunSunday, September 26, 2010. Doors open: 10:00 a.m. Bikes leave: 12:00 noon. Location: Allen County Fairgrounds, 2750 Harding Hwy., Lima. 25th Annual Toy Run. A.B.A.T.E. of Ohio, Inc., Region 3 is part of a nationwide motorcyclist's rights organization that provides political support of rider freedom while promoting rider education and safety. Region 3 includes Allen, Auglaize, Logan, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam, Shelby and Van Wert Counties in Ohio. Each year, Region 3 hosts a Christmas Toy Run to raise money and collect toys to benefit our area's needy children for the holidays. Success has been phenomenal, but is gained only through the cooperation of A.B.A.T.E. members and the community working together to provide for those less fortunate.

Ronald W. Richards Music SeriesSunday, September 26, 2010. 3:00 p.m. Location: Trinity United Methodist Church, 301 W. Market St., Lima.
Trinity United Methodist Church will open its 25th - 26th season of Ronald W. Richards Music Series with a performance by a "Family of Harpists."
The concert will provide a group of selections representing the various seasons of the year. Janice Bishop, principal harpist of the Lima Symphony, will be joined by her sister, Linda Kandel Grieser of Cincinnati and Jan's daughter, Dawn Bishop Chiang, Chicago, where she performs as a soloist and a member of the Artists Trio composed of flute, cello and harp. Joining this group will be Anna Heider, one of Jan's students, and a junior at Lima Central Catholic High School. All programs are presented without charge; however, a free will offering will be received and will be added to the Ronald W. Richards Scholarship Fund administered by the Lima Kiwanis Club of which he was a member.
